The Norristown Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated seeks to encourage motivated and qualified male students to aspire towards higher education & the achievement of their full potential. To assist, we offer several four-year renewable $500 merit scholarships to graduating high school male students. To be eligible to apply, students must live in Norristown/East Norriton/West Norriton or attend Norristown Area High School or maintain an active membership in the Norristown Kappa League/Guide Right Program. It is the Fraternity’s desire that these scholarships will aid the students in satisfying their educational financial obligations.
On Saturday, April 13th, 2019 at 10:00 am, the second annual Educational Achievement Competition finals were held at the Norristown Public Library. This event was sponsored by The Norristown (PA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. through its Scholarship Foundation and Guide Right/Kappa League programs. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity(KAᴪ) is a non-profit, public service college organization with a predominantly African-American membership. The preliminary competitions took place at the Norristown Public Library from February 8 through April 9th, 2019. This community service project was created for male students from 1st – 12th grades within the Norristown Area School District.
The students participated in both cognitive and strategic thinking games (connect four, checkers, chess & Rubik’s cube). After the competitions, the students were asked to share their dreams, hopes, aspirations, plans to attend college and their future career choices with the attendees. The members of the fraternity that were present gave information regarding the colleges/universities they attended and the paths that led to their chosen careers. The importance of educational achievement was highly stressed by the members. The students were given words of advice for success in middle school, high school and college.
All participants received certificates, gift cards and coupons/cards to some of the sponsoring restaurants. Selected participants were awarded new book bags. Refreshments were provided which included Chick-fil-A sandwiches, chips, cookies, water ice, tea and lemonade, water were enjoyed by all. The participants were informed about the Norristown Kappa League/Guide Right program and the annual academic merit scholarships that are awarded to graduating senior male students in the Norristown area.Gratitude was extended to the local sponsors; Applebee’s, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, Panera Bread, Rita’s Water Ice, ShopRite Staples and Wawa.
Final remarks were offered by the Vice Polemarch. The second Educational Achievement Competitions program was successful with a future as an annual activity.
