Kappa League

Guide Right is a program for the educational and occupational guidance of youth, primarily inspirational and informational in character. Its reach extends to high schools and colleges alike. In the latter, giving due attention to the needs of undergraduate Brothers.

Conceived in 1922 by Leon W. Steward, and suggested at the twelfth Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Guide Right became the Fraternity’s National Service Program. Jesse Jerome Peters, later to become the eighth Grand Polemarch, was chairman of the committee, during the administration of W. Ellis Stewart as Grand Polemarch.

A component of Guide Right is the “Kappa League.” Kappa League, originally founded as the Kappa Instructional Leadership League, has been around for over fifty years. It was created as a social action project in 1970, by Brother Mel Davis, then of the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. Kappa League continues to embody all of the elements of Guide Right as proposed with a specific focus on young high school males. It continues to provide focused opportunities to assist young men to grow and become productive citizens within society.
Norristown Alumni has played a strong role in the guidance of the youth of the Montgomery County area. Working with East Norriton and Roosevelt Middle Schools, Norristown’s Kappa League initiative has provided programs to promote interest in Engineering and Science related fields by demonstrating various scientific experiments dealing with chemical reactions. The students were also exposed to the engineering processes involved with rocket ships and the science-art of studying constellations in the realm of Astronomy. In 2006, the initiative was expanded to the West Chester area School District.

The high school students involved with our program have benefited immeasurably from workshops dealing with SAT/PSAT preparation, study techniques, interviewing skills, economics, finance, leadership development, college entry requirements, deciding on a college major, community service, and enterprise projects.
We also provide a one-on-one mentoring program to pair high school students that have an interest in a particular field with Brothers who work in that field. In addition to the seminars and workshops, each “Kappa Leaguer” is given a copy of “Seven Secrets of How to Study” by Dr. Stephen Jones, a noted educator, and author.
An extended initiative within Kappa League involves attending church as a team. The group learn how to operate as an enterprise and have adopted organizational and business processes such as Roberts’ Rules of Order when running meetings. The young men engage in formal elections for officers. Through their leadership teams and mentor sponsors, the Kappa Leaguers apply these processes within their community. Additional sponsored programs led by the Kappa Leaguers include:

The Big 12 College Explosion
College Tours
Large Celebrity Guest Party
Monthly Church Visits
Thanksgiving Turkey basket Giveaways

The Norristown Kappa Leaguers meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month at the Montgomery County OIC Building located at 1101 Arch Street in Norristown, PA beginning at 7 pm.

“Kappa Leaguers” also meet once a month at local colleges to support chapter Guide Right Initiatives. These visits and collaborative activities enable the students to understand the rigors of college life.

Middle School Outreach Programs occur on a quarterly basis.
